Funnel is a peer-to-peer file transfer tool that ships as two products. funnel.photos runs in any modern browser — no install, no sign-up — and is capped at 5 files per session, 2 GB per file, 5 GB total. The Funnel desktop app (Windows, pre-launch) runs fully offline on your local network with no file-count or file-size limits and transfers at LAN-speed. Both use the same encrypted WebRTC engine; files never touch a server in either case.

How does Funnel work?

Each browser opens a WebRTC DataChannel with the other. The Funnel server (a Cloudflare Worker) brokers the handshake by matching the two browsers through the 6-character code, then steps out. Files are chunked into 16 KB slices and streamed directly between the two browsers — the server never sees file contents. On restrictive networks where two browsers cannot reach each other directly (common on mobile-data / carrier-grade NAT), the connection falls back to an encrypted TURN relay; the relay forwards DTLS-encrypted packets and still cannot see file contents.

Do I need to sign up or create an account?

No. Just open funnel.photos and start sending. No registration, no login, no email required for the web version.

How many files can I send per session?

In the browser at funnel.photos, up to 5 files per session. The Funnel desktop app has no limit on the number of files per session.

What is the file size limit?

In the browser at funnel.photos, 2 GB per individual file and 5 GB total across all files in a session. The Funnel desktop app has no file-size or session-size limit.

Are my files stored on a server?

No. Funnel never stores files. All transfers run peer-to-peer between the two browsers. The server only brokers the initial handshake — it never sees file contents.

Is the transfer encrypted?

Yes. WebRTC DataChannels use DTLS encryption by default, end-to-end between the two browsers. The signaling handshake runs over HTTPS, and the TURN relay fallback (used only when direct peer-to-peer cannot be established) also forwards DTLS-encrypted packets — meaning the relay server, like the signaling server, never sees file contents.

Can I send files from my phone?

Yes. funnel.photos works on any modern mobile browser — Chrome for Android, Safari on iOS, and others.

Which browsers are supported?

Any modern browser with WebRTC support — Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Arc, Opera, and their mobile counterparts.

Does Funnel work offline or on a local network?

The browser at funnel.photos needs an internet connection for the WebRTC handshake. The Funnel desktop app runs fully offline on your local network once it is started — no internet required for either the handshake or the transfer.

What is the difference between funnel.photos and the Funnel desktop app?

funnel.photos is the web version — zero-install, runs on any device, capped at 5 files per session / 2 GB per file / 5 GB per session, and uses the internet for the WebRTC handshake. Why use the Funnel desktop app instead of the browser?

Three reasons: (1) no limits — the browser version caps at 5 files / 2 GB each / 5 GB per session; the desktop app has no file-count or file-size limits. (2) Speed — transfers run at LAN-speed, meaning the full throughput of your home network (gigabit Wi-Fi or Ethernet) rather than your internet uplink, which is typically 10× to 100× slower. (3) Offline — once started, the desktop app needs no internet for either the handshake or the transfer. It is built for regular, large-file workloads: backing up files between your laptop and desktop, moving photo or video collections off a phone, organizing archives across your own devices. The browser version remains the right choice for one-off sends between people or sending from a device where you cannot install software.

Why is the desktop app Windows-only at launch?

Initial release focus. macOS and Linux builds are planned for later versions.

How do I get the free desktop license?

What if multiple people use the same network?

Each IP address can sign up up to 2 distinct emails on the waitlist, lifetime. This prevents a single visitor from hoarding free-license slots.

Is there a limit on how many sessions I can start?

A soft limit of 20 sessions per minute per IP. Plenty for normal use; blocks abuse.

What tech does Funnel run on?

WebRTC DataChannels for the transfer, Cloudflare Workers for the signaling endpoint, Cloudflare Durable Objects for session state and rate limiting, MailerLite for waitlist management. The frontend is Vite + vanilla JavaScript + SCSS. No analytics, no trackers.
